3 Tips for Playing Spontaneous Worship Moments on Piano
In Colossians 3:16, we are encouraged to sing “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs” unto the Lord. Spiritual songs are generally understood to be spontaneous, unrehearsed songs that rise from our hearts in the moment.

Spontaneous worship is a great way to sing and play whatever the Holy Spirit may be giving you in the moment. Here are a few tips to succeed musically in spontaneous worship:
Tip #1: Keep a consistent chord progression.
Spontaneous moments often happen in the middle of a song or in between songs. In either case, be sure to choose a consistent chord progression (or follow the one that the worship leader has indicated) and stick with it. Typically, this will be a chord progression from the song - perhaps the chords of the chorus if the team has just finished singing the chorus, or maybe the chords of the bridge if the bridge is coming up next in the song.
Tip #2: Listen to the other instruments.
If you are playing on a worship team, be sure to listen to what the other instruments are playing and make space for them as well. Spontaneous moments do not always have to be “big.” In fact, these special times of worship are often most effective at a softer dynamic level in order to allow space for meditation and reflection.
Tip #3: Ask the Holy Spirit what to play.
Most importantly, ask the Holy Spirit what He would like you to play. Perhaps He will give you an inversion to start with, or a melodic idea, or an accompaniment pattern. He is the only true worship leader, and we have the amazing privilege to follow His guidance in ministering to the heart of Jesus.
