How Long Does It Take to Learn Worship Piano? (What to Expect)

Playing the piano is a skill. Like other skills, it takes some time to fully master. However, with commitment and the right resources, a beginner can begin playing their favorite songs in a couple weeks or less.

For most of my students taking weekly lessons, about 1 to 1 1/2 years is the average time that it takes to feel comfortable to play at an intermediate level. At this level, they are able to play fluently in the keys of C, G, and D, as well as play at a basic level in all other keys. They are also able to improvise, play with expression and dynamic contrast, use a variety of accompaniment patterns, and prepare and lead a worship set. That is a lot of skills to possess after only a year of lessons!

Of course, this timeframe varies based on musical background and practice time each week. However, having taught many students of all ages and aptitudes, I can confidently say that anyone can learn to play worship piano!

The Key to Success

The main key to learning worship piano is finding the right resources. Many people try to learn by watching YouTube videos… and then they end up frustrated or overwhelmed. Most YouTube videos are created by people who know how to play the piano but not how to teach it. There is a difference between those two skills.

Other people take traditional (classical) piano lessons, and they too end up frustrated… because worship piano requires a much different set of skills than classical piano.

Still others try to teach themselves, but because they are trying to learn so many different skills all at once, they too end up overwhelmed.

The key is to find the right resources… created specifically for worship piano, and created by someone who knows how to teach piano in a way that keeps you engaged and excited to learn more.

Since worship is a ministry more than a genre of music, those resources should also have the heart of worship as their foundation.

Lessons with Makayla

Lessons and courses with me incorporate all of these aspects. When I first started teaching piano after college, I discovered the need for worship piano resources that teach piano in a way that is easy for the average person to understand, as well as resources based on the heart of worship and love for Jesus.

As a result, I created an exclusive curriculum that fulfills those goals. This is the approach that I use in online lessons and the Worship Essentials video courses.
