Learn to Play Worship Piano

“I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship Me forever.”
(Jeremiah 32:39)

Worship is the highest calling and what we were created for. We do not learn piano simply to become skilled; we learn piano to find yet another way to pour our love on Jesus.

“It took me a while to find the worship teacher I was looking for . . . and then Makayla came my way. In half a year, she made my dream happen. I feel confident now to play at my church. Makayla is amazing and makes learning so easy and fun.”

Our Approach

Have you ever tried to play your favorite worship song on the piano, only to become frustrated quickly? Perhaps you have taken traditional piano lessons, watched countless YouTube videos, or tried to teach yourself – and ended up feeling overwhelmed or that you “must not be a natural” at the piano.

If this is how you have felt, you are not alone. But I have good news:

The problem is not you. The problem is the process:

1.  Traditional piano lessons focus on a very different skill set than what is needed for worship.

2.  Many YouTube videos are much too complicated, being created by people who can play the piano but have no idea how to teach it.

3.  And learning by yourself typically results in being overwhelmed quickly, because you are trying to learn many different skills at the same time.

In each of these cases, you end up being frustrated – and all you wanted to do was play a simple worship song!

Piano should be easy to learn and fun to play, allowing you to worship freely. Over the past 5 years I have developed a method with my own students that is exactly that: easy to learn and fun to play!

1.  Instead of focusing on the skills needed for classical music (scales, reading music, etc.), we focus on the skills used in worship songs (chording, improvising, ear training... the fun stuff!).

2.  Instead of watching YouTube videos created by people who know how to play the piano but not how to teach it, we learn these skills in a way that is logical and makes sense even to a complete beginner.

3.  Instead of trying to learn many different skills all at once, we use a 5-step approach in which we master one skill at a time before adding another:

Step 1: Learn the fundamentals of the piano and basic chords.

Step 2: Master the key of C. (This allows you to play any song!)

Step 3: Discover chord inversions to make your playing sound beautiful.

Step 4: Add various left- and right-hand patterns.

Step 5: Put it all together. (This is where you learn all keys/tonalities, 7th chords, improvising, the number system, scales, and advanced techniques.)

The heart of worship is the foundation of all that we do. We do not learn the piano to become performers or entertainers; we are worshippers who minister to the heart of Jesus. Specific time is set aside in lessons and courses to cultivate this heart of worship.

You are never too old or too young to fulfill your dreams! At any age, from anywhere in the world, you can learn to worship Jesus at the piano.

“I love taking private lessons with Makayla. Her love for Jesus, and the reverence and beauty in worship for Him shines forth in her lessons and video courses. The most important thing I've learned is to make this all about Jesus, and where my heart should be for Him.”
