The Difference Between Performing and Worshipping: A Heart Check for Musicians

We are worshippers; we are not performers. As worship musicians, this means that we are called to…

…point people to Jesus, not to ourselves.

…minister to His heart, not focus on our own preferences.

…choose songs because He likes them, not because the people like them.

…be more aware of His presence than the presence of others.

…be more concerned with His approval than the approval of others.

Performers have an audience of many; worshippers have an audience of One.

Performers prepare with the audience in mind; worshippers prepare with Jesus in mind.

Performers live for the spotlight; worshippers live for Him to have the spotlight.

Performers desire to be recognized and applauded; worshippers come with the attitude, “He must increase; I must decrease.”

Performance is entertainment; worship is ministry.

Worship is a priesthood.

It is a calling.

It is holy.

It is unto Jesus.

When our worship goes up, His hand goes out.

He touches the people.

He ministers to their hearts in ways that we never could.

And He receives ALL the glory.

May Jesus be lifted high in our worship.

May He be exalted and adored forever.

He is worthy.
