Songs for His Heart: How to Write Worship Songs for Jesus

How do you get inspired to write a song?  How do you find a topic that you will write about and then sing about?  Most songwriting books will tell you to write about what you are passionate about, what interests you at the time, or what people will resonate with.

But as we established previously, worship isn’t about us and it isn’t about the people either.  Worship is unto Jesus.

How to get inspired to write

So, where do our songs come from?  If worship is unto Him, then our songs must come from Him.  We know that He is a God who sings.  He is the author of music, and He sings over us.  So the best songs are the ones that He is singing, and the ones that He has chosen for heaven to sing.

So our highest goal as worship songwriters is to hear what God is singing and what heaven is singing.  This is far greater than trying to put our minds and abilities together to write a song that tops the charts for 2 weeks.  Just think: we can actually sing what God is singing!  We can hear the songs of heaven and bring that heavenly worship here.

The Song of Moses

Revelation 15:3-4 says that in heaven they are singing the song of Moses. This is interesting… because how in the world did Moses write a song that is worthy of being sung in heaven?

I see only 2 options: (1) Perhaps he heard that song being sung in heaven and brought it here.  Or (2) perhaps he was so heavenly minded that the music he wrote fit in perfectly with the culture of heaven, and they decided to sing it.  Either way, Moses wrote that song from a place of worship.

Worship first, songs second

And that is the pattern for us as worship songwriters.  We are first of all worshippers, and from that place we write the songs that the Lord gives us in worship.  Songs that are pure, holy, and filled with His presence must be birthed in that place of worship.

The place of worship and encounter is where the sounds and the ideas of heaven invade this earth – where God takes a dream from His heart and plants it in yours, where He takes a melody that He has been singing for hundreds of years and gives it to you in a dream.

And this applies to more than just music as well.  It is in this place of worship, of living from the heart of God, where He gives you an idea for a business, or a ministry, or a medical treatment, or an app, or a painting.

This is how we can partner with God and carry His dreams and bring His reality of heaven to this earth.  Music is just one way to do that.
